Two
very successful expeditions to Vancouver Island were completed in
2007:
Circumnavigation
– New Record! May 2007
In May 2007, there was a new record laid down
for the Circumnavigation of Vancouver Island in a Sea Kayak. Two
kayakers; Keirron Tastagh (Adventurous Experiences, IOM) and Jeff
Norville (Portland, US) had never met before, paddled a double
kayak 700 miles around Vancouver Island, broke all existing times,
finishing in 19 and a half days! The duo paddled a pink kayak
in an effort to raise both awareness and funds for Breast Cancer.
The idea was inspired by mutual friend and fellow paddler, Ginni
Callahan, who battled breast cancer last autumn.
This was achieved in a Sea Kayaking UK Triton
double kayak (previous records – 26 days in a double and
28 days in a single kayak) and proved that the sleek and very
manoeuvrable Sea Kayaking UK Triton (LINK) double kayaks can be
used for longer expeditions and are faster than the higher volume,
more cumbersome doubles on the market.

Keirron is giving
presentations on the Trip, including stunning photographs, video
footage and discussions, around the UK and Abroad for Breakthrough
Breast Cancer, and has so far raised more than £1000 (including
online donations).

Isle of Man Youth Expedition –
July/August 2007

“Expedition
Training”
|
Our ongoing Youth Scholarship and Development
Program, (part of our commitment to raising the level of outdoor
skills and safety on the Island), provides scholarships (including
a year of vigorous training, throughout the winter as well as
the summer months) for a group of Manx students to partake in
an overseas expedition, every two years. Places are offered to
‘6th form’ pupils from the Island’s Secondary
Schools, for those who show immense enthusiasm and have the dedication
to complete the comprehensive training, in Sea Kayaking, Mountain
walking, Rock Climbing, Navigation, Teamwork and Expedition Planning.
Previous expedition members have also used the trip and its training
to complete their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.
The 2007 expedition team was made up of students
from Ramsey Grammar High School and Queen Elizabeth II High School.
The group trained hard on their skills, (particularly sea kayaking)
forming a tightly knit team. They also worked towards personal
performance awards. Another part of the challenge for the group
was raising money towards their travel costs.
Following a very successful circumnavigation
of the Isle of Man at Easter, the team spent three weeks on expedition
(self sufficient and predominantly wild camping) completing an
8 day remote sea kayak expedition around Cape Scott, a 4 day mountain
hiking expedition in Strathcona National Park, and a 4 day residential
on Orcas Island.

Adventurous Experiences are proud to be working
with such keen and talented young people, and wish them all the
best in their future careers.
Congratulations
to Sam Murphy, who upon completion
of this expedition, began working for Adventurous Experiences
full time as Assistant Coach.
Norway 2009
Preparations are now underway
for the 2009 Youth Expedition to Norway.
All secondary schools on the
Isle of Man will be informed, and during 2008 students will be
given the opportunity to partake in initial group training sessions.
From this group, the small team
will be selected, trained and assessed in their preparation for
Norway 2009!
